Challenging the Disease Concept of Addiction

Most rehab centers in the country today believe that addiction is a disease.  However, at Passages Malibu we believe it is a condition that is fueled by underlying issues, trauma, or pain. Many people quit drugs and alcohol everyday-can you just up and “quit” a disease?  At Passages, we don’t think so.  We like to look at addiction as a dependency issue that you can discontinue with proper help. The best way to do this is to find out what is causing you to self-medicate and be dependent on the drugs and alcohol, and then heal that part of your life. Maybe you’re depressed, or have anxiety, or a lack of purpose. These are a few of the common issues we heal at Passages, and we do this through individual therapy.  We see time and time again how our clients are able to break their dependence on drugs and alcohol as soon as they uncover the reasons why they have chosen such behaviors in the first place. Since we don’t believe in the disease concept, we also don’t believe in placing labels on you of “addict” or “alcoholic.”  We see this as counter-productive, and believe that this treatment practice only reinforces addiction and creates a poor self-image. If you don’t want to constantly fear relapse, don’t want to go to AA meetings or any type of 12-step group, and want to live a happy, healthy, and sober life, then Passages is right for you.
